Humanities Open Day a Great Success
Prospective students keen to pursue a degree in Humanities at UKZN, attended the 2014 Undergraduate Information Open Day on the Westville campus.
The youngsters, some accompanied by parents and also their teachers, were eager to find out more about degree programmes and career opportunities available through the College of Humanities.
Information sessions held by various Deans and Representatives of the six schools within the College outlined details on application and selection criteria for admission into any of the programmes on offer by the College, as well as housing and financial aid issues, among other matters.
Dean and Head of the School of Education, Professor Gregory Kamwendo, spoke on the important role teachers played in society while encouraging learners to consider teaching as a career.
‘Even if you already have a degree in a different field, you can still register with UKZN’s School of Education and study to become a teacher. We are in the business of training passionate, knowledgeable teachers and we take teaching practice seriously by taking students into actual classrooms,’ said Kamwendo.
Dean and Head of the School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics (SRPC), Professor Johannes Smit, gave an address on the various disciplines and programmes on offer within the School.
‘We are research-based and by choosing to study with our School, you’ll be able to develop your own knowledge and become a partner in knowledge production,’ said Smit.
Dean and Head of the School of Built Environment and Development Studies, Professor Thokozani Xaba, spoke on the degree programmes offered by his School, giving prospective students an indication of the variety of careers they could follow such as Architecture, Population Studies and Community Development studies.
Grade 11 learners from the Sacred Heart Secondary School, Zamambo Mkhize and Sindiswa Msomi, were keen to study at the College of Humanities.
‘I really want to become a teacher or a sociologist. It’s something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life and I’m passionate about it. Attending Open Day has been very informative and now I know more about my career options,’ said Msomi.
Mkhize added: ‘I plan on doing really well so that I can be accepted to study at UKZN. I think Open Day is a good idea as it gives learners, like me, more information to make better career choices.’
